Rob Thomas Quit Cocaine After Mother-in-Law Rollocking

The Amazon series stars comedians Sharon Horgan and Rob Delaney playing a married couple imaginatively named Sharon and Rob who decide to stay together after a weeklong fling ends with a pregnancy. Season 3 finds the two about four years into their romance — and with around a combined 80 years’ worth of pent-up horniness, resentments, and the need to make their beloved laugh. Is Catastrophe still a romantic comedy? The show has never been afraid to tackle darker issues like cancer, adultery, and divorce, but Season 3 was still surprisingly sad. But the series thankfully never felt like a downer, largely because the many, many issues that Rob and Sharon are dealing with this year — his alcoholism and being stuck between a desperately unhappy job and emasculation via unemployment; her father’s death and feelings of guilt after cheating for about two seconds ; the possibility of not being able to afford their house anymore — feel poignantly specific to a couple in their forties. Middle age comes at you hard I assume. It was lovely to watch Rob and Sharon lean on each other — or try to spare the other some unnecessary pain — as they were rocked with the, er, catastrophe of the week. So much of pop culture, especially from an upper-middle-class white male POV, is about the need to regain “freedom” from the shackles of stultifying domesticity.

In spite of moments of lightness found in the first episode, A Year to Fall in Love also bought some darker themes to the television table. It became too much only when he began to punch walls. As she sniffles through the story her phone bleeps incessantly in the background, her so-called suitor begging for another chance.

I was once forced to go to the police after a sustained campaign of harassment following the end of a brief relationship. With two women a week being killed by a former current or former partner in England and Wales the statistics made unpleasant reading as I researched how best to handle my situation. I was only driven to seek help when the individual threatened serious physical harm against me or himself if I continued to refuse to be with him.

However alongside this very clear example of concerning behaviour played out a similarly troubling scenario. Twenty-six year old Nick from Wales was introduced as a mild commitment-phobe and serial user of the dreaded double message. He laments his lack of success on dating apps, and wonders what women can possibly not see in his charming and witty profile.

He seems affable and unlucky in love, living with his parents after a stint abroad and making elderflower champagne from garden produce in his spare time. In spite of signs the contrary young Nick is optimistic. When a text fails to materialise, Nick is in denial. He creepily tracks his potential match down on Facebook and messages her. When that evokes no response he calls the friend.

For decades, the young pop stars of Japan and South Korea have been the envy of teenagers.

But behind the glamour, the lucrative industry is run by talent agencies with an iron fist. Both J-pop and K-pop – as Japanese and South Korean pop are known – are multi-million dollar industries yet most of their stars are on salary and do not earn very much. They are also bound by strict rules on how to be idols. In Japan, for example, many are not allowed to date and getting married requires permission.

The “no dating” clause of the contracts has resulted in some idols being sued for breaking it, accused of damaging their reputations. Two years ago Minami Minegishi from popular girl band AKB48 shaved her head and wept in apology , after breaking management firm rules by spending a night with her boyfriend. Manufactured boy or girl bands are nothing new, but Tokyo-based Asia Bureau Chief of Billboard Magazine Rob Schwartz says “it’s unheard of in the West for the agencies to control their personal lives”.

The detection of VP confirms that Sedna is not an isolated object; instead, both bodies may be members of the inner Oort cloud, whose objects could outnumber all other dynamically stable populations in the Solar System. Sedna, VP and almost a dozen other Kuiper Belt Objects are aligned in an odd way compared with other objects in the solar system. The implication of this is that there may be another large planet well beyond Pluto affecting their orbits.

That world would be cold and faint — and would push and pull at the closer objects like a distant but powerful puppeteer. Even if the planet has a small internal heat source — and absorbs some sunlight, it would still not generate enough heat to register, he adds. Yet, as is indicated above, it is indeed possible at the kind of distances we are discussing here. There are likely to be a lot more of these inner Oort Cloud objects discovered in the future.

It’s been 10 years since Sedna was discovered, and at the time Sedna also hinted at a more distant object 4. But Sedna was only one object. With two objects, we now have increasingly compelling evidence that an unknown major body affected the outer solar system in the past.
